Your first stop will be in Ifrane, a charming town often called the “Switzerland of Morocco” for its Alpine-style architecture and cool climate. Continuing onward, you’ll pass through the cedar forests of Azrou, where you might spot Barbary macaques. Afterward, travel through Midelt and the Ziz Valley, known for its lush palm groves and dramatic gorges, before arriving at Merzouga. As the day ends, you’ll switch to camels for a trek into the mesmerizing Erg Chebbi dunes, where you’ll enjoy a traditional dinner and spend the night in a desert camp under the stars.
Day 2: Merzouga – Rissani – Todra Gorges
Wake up early to witness the spectacular sunrise over the dunes before riding camels back to Merzouga. After breakfast and a refreshing shower, the journey continues to Rissani, a historic town known for its bustling market and as the origin of the Alaouite dynasty. From there, travel toward the Todra Gorges, passing through various Berber villages along the way. The Todra Gorges, with their towering canyon walls and lush riverbed, provide an ideal spot for a leisurely walk and exploration. In the evening, relax and enjoy dinner at a local guesthouse near the gorges, where you’ll stay overnight.
Day 3: Todra Gorges – Erfoud – Fes
After breakfast, start the journey back to Fes with a stop in Erfoud, a town famous for its fossil production and as a gateway to the Sahara. You’ll also pass through the scenic Ziz Valley once again, with opportunities to take in the stunning landscapes of palm oases and traditional kasbahs. The route back to Fes offers a peaceful drive through the Middle Atlas, allowing you to enjoy the serene beauty of the region before arriving in the city by late afternoon, marking the end of your unforgettable desert adventure.
